Art Lesson Plans Creating Design Elements
8th grade
Lesson Duration 5-40 minute periods
Lesson Summary: Students will explore design elements and principles and find meaning in their application as the foundation of arts.
State Standards:
25.A.3e Visual Arts: Analyze how the elements and principles can be organized to convey meaning through a variety of media and technology.
25.B.3 Compare and contrast the elements and principles in two or more art works that share similar themes
Materials:
12”X18” sheet of paper
pencil
colored pencils
Objectives:
Students will be able to compare and contrast the elements and principles in two or more art works. Students will view and reflect upon the artwork and how art elements function.

12”X18” sheet of paper

Objectives:
- Students will learn what the design elements are.
- Students will learn how to apply the design elements in a piece of artwork.
- Students will create a sample of design elements.
- Students will be able to identify, compare, and contrast the elements and principles in two or more art works.
- Show power point and visual examples of design elements. “Look at the world in a different way with an artist’s eye”.
- Distribute 12”X18” sheet of paper. Fold paper evenly 4 times this will make 8 rectangles.
- Within each rectangle write the name of one design element.
- Create a sample of each element within each rectangle.
- First create a sample using a letter or number.
- Make the sample large enough to fit within the rectangle.
- Use the characteristics of the design elements to embellish each letter or number sample making sure that that each element is recognizable.
Students will be able to compare and contrast the elements and principles in two or more art works. Students will view and reflect upon the artwork and how art elements function.
