III. Reading Strategy – Marking the Text and making connections (The Art of the Italian Renaissance)
Describe lesson…anticipatory set design. Ask students if they have any relatives
that are from Italy. Tell them that some very famous artist have lived and
worked there. Tell students that today we are going to read an article and look
at some paintings from the Italian Renaissance.
State Standards:
27.A.3b Compare and contrast how the arts
function in ceremony, technology, politics, communication and
entertainment.
27.B.3 Know
and describe how artists and their works shape culture and increase
understanding of societies, past and
present.
Time:
1 – 40 minute class period
Procedure:
1.Reading
Ask students to read the article silently and underline words and phrases that are
art related and circle words that they don’t know.
2.Writing
Have students write the following questions on the back of their packets or a blank piece of paper.
"What do I know about Italian Art?"
"What are my experience with the art from Italy?"
"Where have I heard or read about art from Italy?"
"Why is the art from Italy important to the World?"
3.Show and discuss the images above and make connections
4. Open discussion with class.
5.Collaboration and Inquiry Have students answer the above questions andshare their answers.
