Elements of Art
I. Design Elements – An Introduction
Describe lesson…. Present interactive “Smart Board” activity on the
design elements. Have students participate. Look at interactive

State Standards:
25.A.3e Visual Arts: Analyze how the elements and principles
can be organized to convey meaning through a variety of media and
technology.
25.B.3 Compare and contrast the elements and principles in two or
more art works that share similar themes
Time: 1 – 40 minute class period
Objectives:
- Students will learn what the design elements are.
- Students will learn how to apply the design elements in a piece of
artwork.
- Students will create a sample of design elements.
- Students will be able to identify, compare, and contrast the elements
- and principles in two or more art works.
Procedure:
1. Introduce design elements through the interactive web site.
2. Pass out design element handout, discuss, and glue in their
design books.
Line
II. Design Elements – Line
State Standards:
25.A.3e Visual Arts: Analyze how the elements and principles can be organized to convey
meaning through a variety of media and technology.
Time: 1-2 / 40 minute class period
Objectives:
Students will learn what the design elements are. Students will learn how to apply the design elements in a piece of artwork.
Students will create a sample of design elements.
Students will be able to identify, compare, and contrast the elements and principles in two or
more art works.
Procedure:
1. Distribute handout “5 ways line Vary” and discuss.
2. Have students glue in their design books. On the next blank page of their book have students
make a line design using all 5 types of lines in 3 different ways.

III.Design Elements – Contour Line 6th Grade

27.A.3b Compare and contrast how the arts function in ceremony, technology, politics, communication and
entertainment.
Time: 2- 40 minute class periods
Objectives:
- Students will learn about the artist Pablo Picasso.
- Students will learn that other artists many times share ideas.
- Students will learn that a single line can create an image.
- Students will learn that the arts can communicate and entertain.
- Students will make a contour drawing of their shoe.
- Show video clip of Igor Stravinsky’s “Rite of Spring” from Fantasia 1940 7:32 minutes
good friends. Do share activity.
3. Show video “Pablo Picasso” 4:49 minutes and talk about the artist.
4. Have students glue handout in their design books.
5. Pass out a blank sheet of paper and have students draw a practice contour drawing from the directions given.
6. On the next blank page of their book have students make a contour drawing of their own shoe. A contour
drawing is made by using one continuous line. Students shouldn’t pick up their pencils or erase.

IV. Design Element – Shape
Anticipatory set: Show students examples
State Standards:
25.A.3d Visual Arts: Identify and describe the elements of value, perspective and color schemes; the principles of contrast, emphasis and unity; and the expressive qualities of thematic development and sequence.
Time: 3 - 40 minute class periods
Materials: pencils, rulers, fine tip markers andcolored pencils
Objectives:
1. Teacher will show student samples.
2. Divide 8x10 or smaller paper into four sections.
3. Draw a large bubble letter in each of the four segments and then put a curved line through each letter.
4. Each shape or segment should be colored with a different color so when the project is finished the words won't be recognizable.
4. Students should use markers. See the example below.
